Irish immigrant and private detective Molly Murphy is thrilled to have a ticket to see world-famous illusionist Harry Houdini. But before he can even take the stage, the opening act goes horribly wrong-and the sensational Signor Scarpelli's lovely assistant is sawed in half. In the aftermath, Scarpelli accuses Houdini of tampering with his equipment. Who else but the so-called Handcuff King could have got a hold of his trunk of tricks, which he keeps under lock and key?

And it seems the maestro Scarpelli's not the only one critical of Houdini. Now that he's raised the stakes to such a perilous level, lesser acts are being put out of business. With everyone on edge, Houdini's wife hires Molly to watch his back. But how can she protect a man who literally risks his life every night? Now it's up to Molly to keep an eye on Houdini and find out whether these masters of illusion are simply up to their tricks-or if there truly is something much more treacherous going on...

The Last Illusion (Audible Audio Edition) Rhys Bowen Nicola Barber Audible Studios Books Reviews

OK, this is my 9th Molly Murphy, so I'm addicted. I quit for a while, reading other stuff, but needed something light and fun today. Perfect! I have the flu and Molly Murpjy helped me breeze through the day. Wonderful diversion.
Once again, Rhys Bowen has created a memorable story. The Last Illusion is the latest in the Molly Murphy series. As a female detective, in an era not accustomed to women holding positions of strength, her process almost produces a shout from the reader, "you go girl!"

It was quite fascinating to see Bowen take a delightful fictional character in Molly Murphy and synergize her with an actual historical figure, Harry Houdini. The writing was clever, informative and of the highest caliber.

A long time Rhys Bowen fan, I still recommend for first time readers that you start at the beginning and watch Molly grow and season throughout the entire series of nine books. You will not be disappointed but instead, enlightened and entertained.
Molly finds herself mixed up in a case where truly nothing is as it appears when she works for Mrs. Harry Houdini. Nothing she has seen can be taken for granted because the players in the case are all illusionists. Fewer appearances of old friends in this one because she is so wrapped up in the case at hand. Very good and interesting to read the historical note at the end.
Molly Murphy, recent immigrant and self-starting investigator, goes on a date with her intended; they are both looking forward to seeing the famous Houdini. Unfortunately, the previous act end in tragedy when the sawing a lady in half turns into reality.
Molly is maturing as a character, both personally and professionally. One of the strengths of Rhys' writing is the the depth of her characters. Mixed with an active plot and interesting history, this is a great read.
Best series I've ever read ~ suspense wrapped in a well-researched historical setting! Mysteries and heroine's dilemmas are all solved in different ways, so the endings are not predictable. These novels are real page-turners ~ there is a subsequent novel (14 or 15 to date) to continue the main character's experiences, so you don't feel a letdown as you get to the conclusion of each novel ~ just start reading the next one in the series.
I would recommend reading these novels in order to get a smooth understanding and background of what happened previously to the main character.
"Murphy's Law" is the first novel in this suspenseful series! ENJOY!
As I continue reading this series, I'm amazed at the historical research that was done to make this book of fiction accurate. There are always twist in the plot so you never know til the end who did it. Molly Murphy, in this episode, finds herself again helping to solve a under. Her betrothed, Captain Daniel Sullivan, again forbids her to continue to work as a Private Detective. As they attended a illusionist show, starring, The Great Houdini, tragedy strikes, a murder, accident, or is it an illusion gone wrong is witnessed by this couple in a crowded theatre.
What happens next will keep you spellbound. Excellent read.
Rhys Bowen writes wonderful mysteries. You are left wondering until the end of the book as to who committed the crime. The Molly Murphy series is not just a good mystery read, she writes in depth about the people and places of New York in the early 1900's. She depicts the different areas in New York that had been settled by various ethnic groups. She has done a lot of research to write about New York in this era. The Last Illusion is about magicians that performed in that time, including Harry Houdini, his life, and how he possibly was a spy due to his ability to travel abroad. Something that proved true in her research. She includes interesting details about Coney Island, Stanton Island, the building of the subway, and even the ethnic gangs that came to power in the mix of New York life. The series begins with her fleeing Ireland and traveling on a ship to America. She did a fantastic job describing Ellis Island and being processed as an immigrant there. Not only are her mystery plots a good read, but the characters and the depiction of New York in this era make these books an awesome read.
