What was it like to be biracial in the early 1900’s in a small white southern town where the division between black and white was wide, and you fell through that crack. The subjects are bold abandonment, near death experience, ambition, charges of attempted murder and incest. Hers is a thrilling life story and one that you’re unlikely to forget any time soon. A young black woman finds life both difficult, unexpected, sometimes rewarding, and strange and terrifying.

Quilly's story is fascinating. If you enjoyed The Help, you will enjoy this book, which seems more authentic than The Help. I especially enjoyed the dialog -- the author captured Quilly's voice superbly. I found myself rooting for Quilly, hurting for Quilly, and gained a better understanding of how hard a biracial woman in the 1900s must have struggled to find her place. I usually reserve the term "page-turner" for suspense novels, but Quilly's story is full of twists, turns, and one major "I didn't see that coming" revelation. I gladly gave up sleep to finish Quilly.Product details

A great read.
Enjoyed the book very much! Well written and very entertaining!
I could not put it down. Great read
I love reading about how people lived a long time ago and about how white and colored people got along ( or not ).
Jan's book is right down my alley and I found it difficult to put it down.
This is a fast moving story about love and family with some wonderful Texas history included. I read it in two sittings and the story stays with you after you have finished reading it.
The author Jan Strickland has done an admirable job of describing life in Texas in the early 1900's. The description of race relations seems a little too rosy but we are mostly talking of house servants in which often a close relationship did develop between servant and employer.
Such an interesting tale of love - it's found, it's lost, it's forgiven, it's abhorred, it's forbidden, and ultimately there is love as peacemaker. Quilly is a magnetic character, fully alive in the story that tells of her life and loves. The author weaves the many threads of the plot together in fascinating ways. There are interesting historical, societal and cultural aspects in this novel. And the dialogue of the characters and the close observations of Quilly are delightful and surprising! It is a page turner of a book, I'm so glad I read it. Put this on your reading list!!
